Tips & Troubleshooting
The questions that come up most, and what to do about them.
A project will not reopen
Reopening a project you saved earlier is the one feature a Pro subscription unlocks. Everything else, including creating new work and exporting it, is free and unlimited.
If you are already subscribed and a project still will not open, restore your purchase: open the upgrade sheet and tap Restore. Make sure you are signed in to the same Apple Account you subscribed with.
The canvas feels slow
- Merge finished layers. Past roughly 20 layers, every stroke has more work to do. The app warns you when you cross that line.
- Check the canvas size. A 4K or A3 canvas is several times the pixels of Screen Size. Large canvases are slower everywhere, not just while painting.
- Watch layer adjustments. Bloom and the two shadow filters are the most expensive. Several layers carrying all three at once adds up.
- Close panels you are not using. The history panel in particular updates constantly.
My brush looks tiny
Brush size is in canvas pixels, so the same brush covers proportionally less of a big canvas. On a 4K canvas a brush that felt right at Screen Size will look like a fine liner. Drag the size slider up and watch the live preview rather than trusting the number.
Apple Pencil pressure is not responding
- Check Use Pressure in the gear menu. When it is off, strokes are deliberately uniform.
- Some brushes barely vary with pressure by design. Try an oil or a pencil brush to confirm.
- Make sure the Pencil is paired and charged, and that you are drawing with the tip rather than a finger.
Two-finger tap is not undoing
The tap has to be a clean tap with exactly two fingers, on the canvas rather than on a panel. If a panel is sitting over the spot you are tapping, drag it aside by its grip. With an Apple Pencil Pro you can squeeze instead, and with a keyboard attached ⌘ Z always works.
A palette will not import
Paintrix Studio reads its own .mdpalette files and Procreate .swatches files. Other palette formats are not supported. If a .swatches file will not open, confirm it came out of Procreate rather than being renamed from something else.
Collaboration will not connect
- Both devices need internet access. A local network alone is not enough.
- The host's device runs the session. If it sleeps or the app closes, the session ends for both of you.
- Check the invite code carefully. It is six characters and it is case-insensitive.
- If your partner drops out, their layers lock rather than disappear. Use Claim Layer if you need to keep working on one.
A stroke snapped when I did not want it to
Quick Shapes fires when a stroke stops moving for about a second and a half without lifting. Two-finger tap to undo, then redraw the stroke and lift at the end instead of pausing.
Still stuck
The in-app tutorial is the fastest tour of anything you have not found yet: open the gear menu and tap the circled ?. For anything else, the community on Discord is the place to ask.
